The context
The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative invited the nation to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” to celebrate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s service to the country. From schoolyards and scout huts to local parks and inner-city allotments, everyone answered the call. And 3 million trees later, the initiative came to a close. In celebration, and commemoration, we created a closing film worthy of the movement and the monarch it honoured.

The craft
As with any good film, we started with the script. We knew a typical voiceover wasn’t going to cut it. Beyond description, we wanted to match the emotion and momentum of the movement. Poetic in its prose, with moments of manifesto, our script not only told the story,  but rightly celebrated the people and the purpose behind the initiative.

And when an Oscar-winning star of stage and screen offers to recite the script, the pressure’s on. QGC Ambassador Dame Judi Dench was as warm and welcoming as her performance was rousing and rallying. This national treasure’s narration was the perfect pairing for a film showcasing the pride of a nation coming together.

The film pulled together a mix of archival footage, photography, content taken by participants’ themselves, and a one-day, on-location shoot battling the elements in Peckham. We wove all of these elements together in a 3-minute edit that mirrored the breadth and depth of the nation-wide initiative.

The end result
The final film was a centre piece of the closing celebration, shared across national media, rolled out across social channels, and screened at events.
